ASU’s new Arizona Center for Law and Society broke ground in October 2014 for their 260,000 square-foot facility in downtown Phoenix. The new building is planned to accommodate a projected growth in student population of 20-30% over 10 years, and will house the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics and the McCain Institute for International Leadership, and the ASU Alumni Law Group.
The ASU project will be using Schӧck Isokorb® structural thermal breaks in their structural steel beam connections to offer thermal protection and alleviate condensation issues at the building envelope. Structural thermal breaks will be one of the many energy saving features of the building.
While the development of Boston’s Seaport District has been in full swing for some time now – It recently had a milestone in building innovation.
Watermark, in Seaport Square, is the first project in Boston to break the mold by building with structural thermal breaks for concrete balcony construction. The Watermark Seaport project features a six-story building and a 17-story luxury residential tower at a total of 275,000 square-feet with 300 apartments and 25,000 square feet of retail space. Can you believe 9 out of 10 projects which submit for building permits in New York City fail to meet the baseline energy code?
Seems difficult to imagine, considering the code requirements have not even changed recently.
Normally cantilevered slabs and edges are considered extensions of the floor or roof levels of a structure. Often times however, conditions require a connection along vertical walls or areas where interiors floors are omitted because of stairways or mechanical shafts. These areas have the same potential problems with thermal bridging since there is an interruption in the continuous insulation layer.
For the design of the new Novartis research campus, CannonDesign teamed with Maya Lin and Toshiko Mori to produce a centerpiece in Cambridge, MA for the global leader of the pharmaceutical industry. Boston Globe titles it as, “one of ten projects that will change innovation landscape in Boston and Cambridge.”
Increasing the land lease with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Novartis is developing a $600 million, 550,000 square foot campus consisting of a lab, office and retail space. In May 2013, Sacred Heart University Campus in Fairfield, CT broke ground on the largest new academic building in the school’s 50-year history. The new structure will house the John F. Welch College of Business (COB), the Department of Communications, the Media Studies programs and the Executive Leadership Institute at 5401 Park Ave.
Designed by Sasaki Associates, the modern three- level, 125,000 square-feet design strives to balance traditional with contemporary. Building on technology as the backbone, the new building will provide a professional and collaborative environment for learning at all levels.
We must give the crew working the Tower at PNC Plaza some well deserved credit. The downtown Pittsburgh structure is climbing steady at 30% total progress, with completion of the structural steel more than half way done. See the progress on the Tower at PNC Plaza project website.

This month, during the Boston Society of Architects Annual Meeting, our friend and colleague Richmond So P.E., P. Eng., C.Eng., MIStruct E. received an Honorary award with the American Institute of Architects BSA 2013, for his outstanding dedication to collaborative practice and design excellence.
Richmond and his team at RSE Associates have been great help to our internal Schock team by providing their consulting and engineering services. We are always striving to provide the best solutions for our customers and having their support has been very important.
The event was followed by with the gala opening of the BSA Space exhibit, Rights of Way- Mobility and The City.
Rights of Way is a global exploration of mobility and transportation in cities. The exhibition feature dozens of examples of visionary urban thinking, showing how the city is shaped by the ways people move through it.
Curated by James Graham and Meredith Miller of MILLIGRAM-office, Rights of Way demonstrates that our urban environment is the result of constant negotiation among designers, policy makers, the private sector, and individual residents. The exhibit will be on display at the BSA until May 26, 2014.

The 199 Mott St. condo building is being labeled, “The Green Collection” due to the energy efficient initiatives which are being installed in the structure.
Located in the Nolita area of New York, between Kenmare and Spring Street, construction continues to progress on the “steampunk aesthetic” development. Kutnicki Bernstein Architects designed the boutique, eight story building, which will include a ground-level retail area, 11 residential units and a rooftop terrace.
The owners, Alfa Development, are raising the bar on luxury condo construction by implementing design knowledge and well-known strategies to maximize energy efficiency, thermal comfort and indoor air quality.
Alfa began with Chelsea Green by taking responsibility to build to higher energy efficient standards in their luxury condo suites, which sold 90% of their units off the floor plan.
Last week I was fortunate to speak to a group of over 50 NYC “passivists” about solving the thermal bridging problem in concrete slab and steel beam connections.

The 32nd Annual Steel Design Conference will be held on June 5, 2013, 9:00am to 3:00 pm.
I am excited to attend the 17th International Passive House Conference in Frankfurt, Germany on April 17-21. With 16 session and 90 presentations this is the world’s largest Passive House Exhibition. With a focus on energy efficiency and renewables, the conference will cover a wide range of topics from regional concepts, energy refurbished projects, and the use of renewable energy sources.
This years conference will include presentations on large number of US projects, a trend that is growing as energy use continues to become a greater focus in buildings.
Just last month, Schock received Passive House certification of the very first “thermal bridge free” construction for balconies while attending the BAU show, the World’s leading fair for Building and Design.
Schӧck Isokorb® has made a (thermal) breakthrough in New York City: Isokorb ® has been successfully installed in the first thermally broken balcony in the big Apple. Schӧck USA recently received NYC DOB approvals for the Isokorb® module and now a flag has been planted in Manhattan.
In early 2012, we had the first steel thermal break connection at Fulton Street Transit station. And while Isokorb® has been installed globally, with over 10 million thermal break units, over a span of more than 20 years, a concrete thermal break project in New York City is an accomplishment in which we are proud!
The first concrete thermal break in NYC is at the Chelsea Green Development. Located at 151 West 21st Street, the project is expecting to be LEED Version 3 Gold‐certified, and is designed by Architect Stephen B. Jacobs Group and structural engineering by WSP Cantor Seinuk.
On November 14-16th, the Isokorb® product was featured in the Innovative Products Pavilion at ABX (Architecture Boston Expo) 2012.
Alongside Isokorb® were other innovative products, such as Schuco Curtain wall systems.
There was a great amount of interest in the Isokorb® displays and samples. People were drawn to the unique nature of how the product works and many said this will solve problems in design and construction which have always been overlooked. … read more
It was this July while in Baden-Baden for the Schöck 50th party that I got to meet (among many others) our fellow colleagues from Schöck Ltd. UK. Simon Howland and several others from the office happened to be on a production tour with me. While lagging towards the back of the pack, we got to talking. I was describing how we are just underway in the US and our efforts to educate about the problems of thermal bridges. They understood, having been in the same situation. Now they are 6 years in the making, with steady project flow, gaining market share and an acceptance by the building community that structural thermal breaks really are necessary to make a proper building envelope.
